An art-tech project by BIKMAN WEI

The Rain Translator is my first open-source project with AI applications. It allow users to modify the python-web based applications to fits their desired purpose. The code is now available on GitHub.

How it works

First, follow the instructions on GitHub to deploy the python program. Once it’s running successfully, you’ll see the interface in your browser. Next, cover a wireless keyboard with a plastic bag to make it waterproof. Then, place the keyboard in heavy rain. As raindrops hit the keys, random characters will be entered into the program. After collecting 10 characters, the program will use the ChatGPT 4.1 Mini model to process the input based on a predefined prompt. The result will be a short poem, with specific letters from the raindrop input highlighted in the verses.

The inspriation

The starting point of this project was a video from Instagram creator @pablo.rochat, who demonstrated how raindrops can serve as a natural source of randomness. In his video, characters appeared randomly in a text editor as it rained outside. It was a beautifully creative and poetic concept—though I still had to explain it to my mom for her to fully grasp it.

As I began exploring coding with large language models and prompt engineering, I saw an opportunity to build on this idea using the power of AI. My goal was to make it more accessible and easier to understand for those without an art school background—like my mom.

I am thrilled to share this project with you. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or feedback. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and any poetic modifications you might have for this project.
